Book A Second Harvest (Men of Lancaster County Book 1) Review :

First, let me say that I enjoy this author's work. I've read several of her books and found them very engaging, if not a bit uninspiring when it comes to dialog during sex. (So many writers of this genre use the same dialog repeatedly - "Now. Need you now." 'Harder." "More. Need more" "Need all of you." Really? Nothing more inspiring than that?) But, her stories have interesting characters and the storylines have promise. However, this book revealed several incongruencies in my mind.First, when someone refers to a man as a "silver fox", I instantly assume then man is of a certain age - say in their 50's or older. One of the main characters in this book, named David, is referred to as "older" and a "silver fox" when he's ONLY 41 YEARS OLD! PLEASE! Couldn't the author have written him as truly an older man? 40 in the new 30! It's not old!Second, David lived on his farm his entire life. Christie would come to visit his Aunt Ruth - who lived just a quarter mile down the road - every summer for two weeks and they never met??? You would think that sometime throughout Christie's adolescence that he might have met the neighbors at some point? They live in the country - everyone knows each other's business in small towns/rural areas.Third, at one point Christie was talking about making burgers and fries for that night's dinner with David and the next paragraph has David drooling over the Indian inspired meal they just ate. I thought they were having blue cheese burgers and sweet potato fries?Fourth, David tells Christie that he wants his "first time" with another man to be special, implying that he doesn't want it to be impulsive or skanky. So, what does Christie say to David when they do have sex for the first time? He says, "Do you want to f*** me?" That doesn't sound very romantic to me.Fifth, a hugely traumatic event takes place towards the end of the book and then there is no follow up except in the epilogue. A brief explanation as to the events that occurred afterward is given. Neat and tidy. What about the emotional impact of the trauma??Sixth, the story seemed to end very abruptly and we are to assume everyone lives HEA. I felt cheated out of more story development.
I've loved many of Eli Easton's novels (Superhero has been on my top 5 all-time list since I first read it- and have reread a dozen times). This book may be my new favorite from her.A Second Harvest is the story of David, a 41yo Mennonite farmer from Pennsylvania. Widowed two years earlier, and his two college age children off studying, David is just going through the the motions of living while taking care of his farm. Into his quiet life comes Christie, a hard partying 30yo New Yorker trying to decide what he wants from life after a life threatening scare. Christie has inherited the farm next door to David's and decides that getting away from it all and trying a quiet life in the farmlands of PA is just what he needs. What he didn't plan on was the hot, older farmer that lives next door. As the two men become friends over shared meals, farm work, and exercise, Christie begins to fall for his straight neighbor. But what Christie doesn't realize, is that David has been hiding feelings that just would not have been accepted by his family and church. As the two try to navigate their feelings for each other, they must also deal with the issues their relationship will cause for family and friends, and if the rewards of that relationship will outweigh the consequences.I knew this book was coming out months ago (I had heard from the author while she was still writing it) and have been waiting for it excitedly. I can't explain why this book hit me so hard. I read hundreds of books every year and many of them make an impact on me. But this book...Wow! I think I just found myself so connected to the character of David, maybe seeing something of myself in him. It's rare that I so connect with a character even in other books that I love.Loved the characters, loved the story, a couple of great sex scenes (the scene where Christie "shows" David how to sext-OMG), some angst, and HEA. My only complaint; I wanted the epilogue to be in Bora-Bora (read the book, that will make sense)
